Federal Dredging

Dredging is the process of moving solids – sediments in marine environments.  The process may be to support commercial navigable waterways, fossil fuel fly ash facilities or environmental remediation.  Various factors including material type, quantities and disposal requirements will determine the type of dredge from hydraulic, mechanical or both.

Dredging is necessary because of the natural process of sedimentation; sand and silt that washes downstream gradually fills channels and harbors. Sedimentation is a problem everywhere from small marinas to large harbors.  Managing dredged material in an environmentally sound manner is not just environmentally responsible, it is the law.  Before dredged material is authorized for disposal, it must satisfy, among many other things, a three-part review in accordance with the applicable EPA statutes, and regulations.

Southern Shores has extensive experience in both mechanical and hydraulic dredging and can provide the necessary equipment for successful disposition of material from cradle to grave.  Both methods of dredging require a unique complement of equipment to service and support the process.  Experience is the key to make this process efficient and cost effective.
